Heteropessimism Tracker

The internet is littered with claims of "heteropessimism". The always sharp Magdalene Taylor recently published an article defending dating men. For this report, I wanted to see if I could substantiate the claim that people are feeling negatively about heterosexual dating. Another thing sparked my interest. A new report by the FT that claims that phones may be responsible for the decrease of fertility rates. The reporter astutely remarked that phones may be responsible for a decrease in socialization (more screen time means less people time) but that however they may also be a vector to disseminate new ideologies or societal feelings that hinder the formation of relationships. I used TikTok for this reason as there is quite a bit of dating discourse on there.

Central Question

Is heteropessimism rising over time?
Heteropessimism is coded when a video combines cynical or negative sentiment with a worldview of "dating is broken" or "protect yourself" — the ideological mood that heterosexual relationships are structurally exhausting or not worth pursuing. Cautionary content that is ultimately hopeful does not qualify.
